Stephen C. Spiteri B.A. (Hons.) Public Admin., Dipl. (Int. Des.) RI, born in Malta, 15 September 1963.  Educated at St. Aloysius College, B’kara and later at the University of Malta where he is also currently reading for a Ph.D. degree.  His interest in the military aspect of Maltese history has led to a number of books and papers on the fortification and military history of Malta and the Knights of St. John. Amongst these are Fortresses of the Cross:  Hospitaller Military Architecture (1994), British Military Architecture in Malta (1996),  The Fougasse: the stone mortar of Malta (1999) and Fortresses of the Knights (2001).

Mr. Spiteri has worked in heritage conservation and museums, where he also served for a while as Acting Curator of the Palace Armoury during which time he researched and produced the publication The Palace Armoury: A study of a military storehouse of the Knights of the Order of St. John (1999).  He is currently  Superintendent of Fortifications in the Restoration Unit, Works Division, Ministry for Resources and Infrastructure.  He is also Chairman of the Research Commission of the Sacra Militia Foundation for the Study of the Military & Naval History of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.
